Festetics Castle

In a large park north of Keszthely center lays the 111 halls and rooms Palace which was the residence of the Festetics family for two hundred years. The Festetics were one of the richest aristocratic families in Hungary and had a considerable influence on the development and culture of Keszthely and the surrounding areas. Family members founded pharmacies, hospitals, grammar schools and in 1779 Count Gyorgy Festetics founded “The Georgikon”, which was Europe’s first Independent Institution of agricultural higher education. It was established with an 11-hectare dendrological garden

The first palace, built for Kristóf Festetics in 1745, was a comparatively modest affair with "only" 34 rooms and a French Baroque garden. A fountain, the work of the Keszhely master builder Antal Hencz, was built in the middle of the semi-circular park in front of the castle.

Aesculus pavia

The garden at the rear was designed by the English landscape gardener E.H. Miller.
